Anthropic Keeps Extending Fable 5’s Free Access

TL;DR

Anthropic has twice pushed back the end of Fable 5's included access for paying Claude subscribers, from July 7, 2026 to July 12 and then July 19.

  • Both delays followed user pushback
  • OpenAI says GPT-5.6 matches or beats it
  • Credits would carry Anthropic's top rate
  • No date is set for uncapped access

Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, has pushed back the same deadline twice. Paying subscribers were due to lose included access to Fable 5, its most capable AI model, on July 7, 2026. The cutoff moved to July 12, then to July 19, each time before it arrived.

The model launched on June 9, built for the hardest research, coding and writing work. Subscribers on Claude’s paid plans can use it for up to half their weekly usage allowance. After that, they drop to a cheaper model or pay separately for what they use. A model that capable also costs more computing power to answer each request. The company has said it wants the model in standard subscriptions for good once it has the capacity to serve everyone without a cap.

Until then, the company is rationing access through those cutoffs. Once one holds, using the model inside a subscription is expected to need prepaid credits. AI models read and write text in small chunks called tokens, and the credits would cost $10 per million tokens read and $50 per million written. That is the highest rate Anthropic has posted for any model it offers broadly.

The second extension came within days of rival OpenAI opening its newest model, GPT-5.6, to all users. By OpenAI’s own published comparisons, the newer model matches or beats Fable 5 on several independent tests of coding and reasoning. On one coding test, it scored nearly 3 points higher while taking less than half the time and costing about a third less.

That comparison puts Anthropic in a bind, because Fable 5 is the only model in its lineup built to compete at that level. Pulling it from standard subscriptions while a rival ships a cheaper model of similar quality would leave a normal plan with nothing to match it.

Customers objected when the company first tried to end the included access in early July. People already paying for a premium plan did not expect its newest model to carry a separate charge. Both extensions came only after users pushed back.

Anthropic has given no date for the model to become an uncapped, standard part of subscriptions, and no public plan for July 19 if capacity is short.
