Is an AI certification worth it for a business leader?
A decision checklist: what employers check, when a certification pays for itself, and when a free course is the better buy.

Is an AI certification worth it?
For a business leader an AI certification is worth it when three things are true: your role now includes AI decisions you cannot yet defend, the program produces something you will use (a plan, a policy, a roadmap) rather than a badge alone, and the credential can be checked by the person who reads your profile. If any of the three is false, a free course is the better buy.
What employers actually check
Almost no one checks the certificate. They check what you can do in the room: whether you can size an AI use case, set a guardrail, and defend a plan. A verifiable credential earns a second look and confirms you did the work; it does not carry the interview. So the value of a certification is mostly the value of what it made you build, plus a small, real premium for being checkable.
The eight-question checklist
Run any program past these before you pay. A “no” on the first four is a reason to keep your money.
- Does it end in something you will use, a plan or policy or roadmap, not only a badge?
- Is the credential verifiable by a stranger, with a public page and an ID?
- Can you see the full curriculum before you pay?
- Is the price the whole price, with no exam or renewal fee hidden behind it?
- Is the exam real, timed and graded, rather than a completion tick?
- Does the credential last, or does it expire and charge to renew?
- Do you know who wrote it, and can you check them?
- Is there a refund if it is not what you expected?
When a free course is enough
If you want to understand AI for your own use and do not need a checkable credential, a free course is the honest answer. IBM's free executive materials and Coursera's AI For Everyone both teach the concepts well. You leave with understanding and no credential, which is exactly right when no one is going to verify anything. Pay for a certification when the plan it makes you build, and the fact that it can be checked, are worth the price.
