Opinion: AI Agents Are Redefining Every Career

TL;DR

Managing AI agents is becoming the core skill of most knowledge-work careers, built on setting direction, judging quality and supervising the agents as they work.

  • Experts still matter but work via agents
  • A shared quality bar guides the agents
  • More work moves past drafts into action

Job titles still exist, but they explain less of what creates value at work. Managing AI agents, software that plans tasks and carries out the steps, is becoming the core skill of most knowledge-work careers. What these careers share is setting direction, judging quality and supervising the agents as they work.

Expertise still matters. A finance leader still needs to understand how a P&L behaves inside a spreadsheet, and a product leader defines the specs and trade-offs that shape what ships. The difference is that this expertise flows through agents rather than through manual work.

That changes what “good” means at work. The most valuable input is a clear outcome and a clear view of what customers want. It also takes a standard of quality the whole team shares, because that standard is what the agents work against. Agents then do the work, while people monitor it, correct it and decide when to trust the output. The payoff is speed and capacity, because fewer hours go into repetitive production and more go into the decisions that shape results.

All of this depends on agents that can work inside real tools rather than only write text. A bigger working memory, the amount of information a model can hold at once, lets an agent handle larger spreadsheets and more code without repeated instructions. One research method, Toolformer, teaches models when to call on an outside tool and how to use what it returns. Another, ReAct, has a model think, take a step, check the result and then continue. That loop cuts guesswork on tasks where results need checking.

Once agents can act and check their own steps, more work moves past drafts and into execution. Because that changes the skill every career shares, organizations that expect their people to adjust have to invest more in them.

Agents can also work in teams. In one research approach, specialized agents work together by exchanging messages, which makes work easier to split up and put back together. However the agents are arranged, someone still has to set the objective, define what counts as acceptable and decide what ships.
