Many business owners assume they need a fresh set of tricks to appear inside Google’s AI answers. Some services, sold as “answer engine optimization” or “generative engine optimization,” treat showing up in AI answers as its own discipline. The company rejects the split. In its view, optimizing for AI search is optimizing for search, which is still SEO.
A Google guide says the same ranking and quality systems behind ordinary search decide what shows up in its AI features. AI Overviews and AI Mode, the AI-written answers Google shows alongside its standard links, draw each answer from the same index of web pages.
The features also split one question into several related searches to gather a fuller answer. A question about fixing a weedy lawn, for instance, fans out into searches on weed killers, chemical-free removal and prevention. Each of those searches runs on that index, so to appear in an AI answer at all, a page must already be in it. A page that is not eligible to show in normal search with a snippet, a short preview of the page, does not appear in AI answers either.
Once a page is eligible, content carries the most weight in the guide, which asks for unique material. The AI features review a range of sources, so a first-hand account stands out. The guide warns against recycling what others have published, or anything an AI tool would produce on its own. Its example compares two posts. One, “7 Tips for First-Time Homebuyers,” rests on common knowledge. The other, “Why We Waived the Inspection & Saved Money: A Look Inside the Sewer Line,” reads like someone who did the work.
Most of the remaining advice will look familiar. When AI answers include nearby businesses, a complete, current Google Business Profile, the listing a company keeps on Google, helps it appear. The AI features also show what people say about a business in blogs, videos and forum discussions. The guide cautions against chasing mentions that are not genuine, because the AI features lean on the same systems that reward high-quality content and block spam.
The guide even notes that many pages thrive in search, AI answers included, without any obvious SEO work. No site, it adds, has to do everything the guide lists to succeed.
