Google’s New Gemini Embedding 2 Model Makes More Data Usable

TL;DR

Google's Gemini Embedding 2 is designed to let AI systems search audio, video, images and documents directly, without first converting them into text.

  • The model handles five formats together
  • Each conversion step strips away detail
  • The rival comparisons come from Google

Most company knowledge does not live in clean text. It sits in documents, recorded meetings, product images, support call audio and other files spread across the business. That causes a problem for the AI systems that search company material before answering a question. When the answer sits inside audio, video or an image, many of them force the original into text first. Gemini Embedding 2, an AI model from Google, is designed to let them search the original files instead.

The workaround many teams use is to transcribe video and audio, describe images in words and reformat documents so a single search system can handle them. The approach can work, but every extra step adds delay and complexity, and each one strips away part of the original. Tone can weaken, visual detail can disappear and context can narrow before the system has even started answering.

Gemini Embedding 2 turns content into a mathematical description that a search system can use, a job known as embedding. Google calls it its first embedding model to handle text, images, video, audio and documents together. Because it describes all five in the same terms, the system can compare content across formats directly. Audio no longer has to be transcribed first, and video can go in as it is.

In principle, less information is lost before the system matches a question to the right source. The economics of using company data with AI change too. A business with thousands of files in different formats can drop the separate preparation chain for each one. Google also presents the shorter process as a way to cut the delay between asking a question and getting an answer.

A shorter process only helps if the search also gets better at finding the right material across those formats. Google says the model beats rival models from Amazon and Voyage AI, and its own earlier ones, on many tasks involving text, images, video and speech. The model opened to developers in early March 2026 as a test version, called a public preview, and those comparisons come from the company’s own launch material.
