Claude Now Runs in Four Different Modes

TL;DR

Claude's four modes, Chat, Cowork, Code and Design, use the same AI but differ in how much work each does from a single typed sentence.

  • Chat never leaves the conversation
  • Cowork works a task from start to finish
  • Code runs tests to check its own work
  • Design hands its work to Code to build

Ask which version of Claude, Anthropic’s AI assistant, fits a task, and the answer starts with another question: which mode, exactly? Claude runs in four modes, called Chat, Cowork, Code and Design. All four use the same AI underneath, so the difference is easy to blur. The clearest way to tell them apart is by how much each one does after a single sentence is typed in.

Chat is the simplest of the four to explain, because it never leaves the conversation. Someone types in a question, a half-formed idea or a document that needs another pair of eyes, and Claude answers, the same way it does on claude.ai. Chat is built for writing and brainstorming, with nothing to connect or set up, because the conversation itself is the whole tool. The next move belongs to the person reading the answer.

Cowork is for when an answer needs to become finished work. It sits one tap away from Chat, in the same message box, and works through a single instruction from start to finish. It can sort an inbox, read files, fill in a spreadsheet or pull a document together while the person is in a meeting. With an add-on for the Chrome browser, it can also click through websites and fill out forms. A task can even run on a schedule, so a weekly report or a recurring cleanup happens without anyone starting it by hand. Underneath, Cowork runs on the same engine as Code, so it can keep a long, multi-step job on track.

Code aims that engine at software. A person describes in plain English what needs building or fixing, whether a website, an app or a small program. Code reads the existing project, plans the change and writes it. It then runs tests to check its own work, which is why a person can review a finished result without checking every line.

Design works a little differently, with its own space for visual work, apart from the other three. Asked for a pitch deck, a product mockup or an app’s screens, it produces a first version, which the person refines through conversation, comments or direct edits. Once a design is ready, it can be exported as a deck or handed straight to Code, which builds it into a working product.
